Our adoption was finalized on PI day 3.14 (March 14). It changed our lives forever. We wanted to commemorate that. We want to share our story. About being offended. The young generation has decided that being and/or becoming a victim by being offended equals power, and it’s very sad. Offended (or should I say, ‘off-ended’?)? Go be offended somewhere else. I don’t have time as I have a real life to live. Sad. I went through this crap all the I hate color blind people shirt and by the same token and way through my childhood and well into my adulthood until something snapped in me (in a good way) and I FINALLY got it. People will only mistreat you as much as you allow them to. It all started when I was the only person of color in my elementary school way out in the sticks in Iowa. There were no others like me anywhere. No one had my back, so I was an easy target. On top of that, I was very short and small. They called me every racial slur in the book and harassed me every day. Whenever I tried to fight back or stand up for myself, I always got the blame and was punished for it no matter who started it. The other kids saw that, and it intensified the bullying when they saw that there would be no repercussions for their actions. I told my dad and he just laughed about it. I never understood why other people’s suffering was amusing to him.
